Great White Sharks Get Scared?!?!?!?

New study: There’s one animal great white sharks are really afraid of

New Study: There are one animal great white sharks are really afraid of by Paul Rogers explores the phenomenon of great white sharks being bullied and hunted by orcas, otherwise known as killer whales.

Throughout many generations of people and the societies they live in, great white sharks have been considered the ultimate predator of the oceans.  This in part may be true, however, the great white sharks would not agree if they could actually speak.  Researches have been conducting tests and experiments of the great white sharks and have noticed that when they encounter orcas in their vicinity they flee the area never to return again.  The reason sharks are terrified of orcas is three-fold. Orcas hunt in packs making it harder for the sharks to defend themselves.  Orcas can also grow to sizes longer than sharks and their weight can also exceed that of great white sharks by dozens of pounds.  With this said, scientists have found through several field tests in the Pacific and Indian Oceans that when sharks encounter orcas in the vicinity of a place they might be feeding that the sharks flee the area, sometimes swimming at least 50 miles away AND NEVER RETURNING UNTIL SEVERAL YEARS LATER.  The animals that have benefited from these shark/orca encounters have been the seal and other mammal wildlife that is the natural food for these great white sharks.

I think this story is important because there are people who have the misconception that great white sharks are at the top of the food chain in the world's oceans.  When in fact, orcas or killer whales rightly deserve the spot for the most fearsome predator in the world's oceans.  If scientists keep studying the interaction between great whites and orcas maybe one day we could use this data to help improve the populations of the hunted mammals that great whites seek to eat.
